Old letters

posted 1 year ago

Today, I had to go to my grand-pa’s to pick up my brother.

While I was there, I remembered that my granny once told me she had two boxes in the attic containing the letters she and my grand-dad wrote to each other before they got married. She wanted to burn them because she couldn’t bear the “shame” of her children finding them but I convinced her to keep them by telling her it was part of her memories and that old letters are always interesting to read afterwards. So she went upstairs and put my name on the boxes so that I would be the only one to read them but she made me promise that I would wait after her death before opening the boxes.

A few days ago, my mother’s sister called and told my father that she had his electric train because she “found a box upstairs” at my grand-pa’s and she just took it. So I figured that if she ever saw the two boxes with the letters she would take them even if my name was on them. So I took them home before she could find them (she is a real vulture, actually).

I haven’t read them yet, I’ve just opened the boxes and found my granny’s floral wedding crown and the wedding menu. I’ve also learnt that my grand-dad isn’t called René, like I thought he was but René-François (his announcement of birth was in one of the boxes)!

I have to find the perfect time to read them…so I can fully enjoy them.

Day 25 (25.1.11) - Forgotten
We took all our Christmas decorations down a couple of weeks ago…except this Christmas ball that we forgot near the front door. My father realised that it was there today when he came back from his training at the hospital.

Day 24 (24.1.11) - At the bottom of a drawer

I was in my room, watching TV when I decided to open one of my desk drawers, the one where I keep my poems, my writings and all sorts of inspirational things. At the very bottom, under several notebooks and papers, I found an old scratch pad that I had when I was about 8 years old.
I found in it a couple of texts I had printed from the Internet, a few coloured drawings of Leprechauns and christmasy things, a (very bad) drawing of my brother’s face by myself, a drawing my brother made me a few years ago and these two drawings, carefully kept under all these other sheets of paper.
I had completely forgotten about them but I must say I am quite proud of myself. I’ve never been good at drawing things directly from my head but I love copying drawings from books, magazines, cartoons… I used to do this a lot because it made me feel so calm and serene. I should start doing this again!

Day 23 (23.1.11) - New book!
Finished ‘The Last Dickens’ last night so I needed a new book to read. I wanted a bit of French so I could read quite quickly and I found this one that my Mum and I bought last year.
It’s not very long and it looks intriguing so I thought I’d give it a go.

Day 22 (22.1.11) - Meow!
Today I went out with my friends. I hadn’t seen them in months and two of them hardly gave me any news while I was away so I never thought they would come to the cinema…but they did! I was so happy to see them!
We ate together at McDonald’s after the movie and we when a member of the staff told us they were closing, we went back to Tristan’s car to keep talking. We stayed on the car park for hours, laughing, talking complete nonsense. We had a really good time! But it was so cold outside that our breath made steam on the windows of the car and we all started to draw on them…
I made a huge Cheshire cat (like the one in Alice in Wonderland) on the windscreen so that everytime there is steam, Tristan will think of me (and curse me, probably!). It was not easy to take a good picture of it but I think we can see it quite well on this one…

Day 21 (21.1.11) - Once upon a time…
Couldn’t think of anything to capture today and it was getting late so I thought I’d just introduce you to one of my book guardians: A leprechaun that likes to read Shakespeare in his spare time. Haven’t named him… Any ideas?

Day 20 (20.1.11) - Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…
Today was expected to be a very grey and dull day…but in the afternoon, it suddenly began to snow like mad! The garden was covered with snow in no time! It didn’t last, though and the next morning it was all gone but it was crazy! A real storm!

Day 19 (19.1.11) - The Last Dickens
Didn’t do anything exciting today and spent most of my day reading one of the book I bought in England before I came back to France. It’s a very good book!

Day 18 (18.1.11) - Souvenir from Spain
This is the fan I bought last year when I was in Erasmus in Granada. It reminds me so much of all the good times I’ve had over there! Unforgetable!
